Overview:
In collaboration and under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating special education services within the Lancaster District. The Assistant Director works cooperatively with other administrators to develop programs which meet the special needs of students K-12.
The Assistant Director of Special Education collaborates with the Pre-K-12 administrative team, Special Education providers, staff, students, and families for the purpose of planning, developing, implementing, maintaining, and evaluating educational services and/or programs for both preschool and school-age students.
Core Responsibilities:
Chairs school age and preschool age CSE meetings and ensures proper delivery of recommended programs and services
Guides administrators and teachers on teaching methodology, appropriate instructional strategies and information related to curriculum, standards, assessments and graduation requirements
Ensures the seamless delivery of support services for school age and preschool students
Directs the Medicaid Administrative Claiming process and direct billing of Medicaid-eligible special education services provided by the District, for the purpose of maximizing reimbursement
Oversees all instructional services provided for private and parochial schools
Serves as instructional liaison to BOCES in areas related to instruction
Supervise the administrator(s) of the home instruction program/McKinney-Vento (Homeless) program
Collects, records and reports required special education data, submission to NYS Education department
Make arrangements for and monitor programs and services specified in each child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) including the timely processing of necessary paperwork
Supervises and evaluates School Psychologists/Interns, Family Resource staff members; Office Clerical Staff; Special Education Teachers, Social Workers, and Speech Therapists
Preferred Qualifications:
Comprehensive knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ESSA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and NYS Part 200/201 Regulations
Possesses a broad background of experience in elementary and secondary education with successful teaching and/or administrative or supervisory experience
Possesses the ability to work with groups and individuals to affect change
Holds a New York State Certification as School District Leader (SDL) or its equivalent
Possess knowledge and skills in implementing evaluation procedures for instructional programs and personnel
